Affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, the nonwoven fabric industry has come under increased attention.
Many nonwoven fabric companies specialize in the R&D, production, and sales of nonwoven fabrics and footwear materials. According to relevant officials, nonwoven fabrics have a wide range of applications. Due to the impact of the pandemic, medical and healthcare nonwoven fabrics have received particular attention. (Nonwoven fabrics, also known as non-woven fabrics, are made from fibers that are either oriented or randomly arranged. They are called “fabrics” because they resemble conventional textiles in appearance and possess certain textile-like properties.) Under the pandemic conditions, Zongde Company, which primarily focuses on nonwoven fabrics for footwear, has been affected by the slower resumption of work and production at upstream shoe manufacturers as well as disruptions in the supply of downstream raw materials, leading to extended product turnover periods and higher inventory costs.
The official suggested that Zhongshan, with its established foundation in the textile and apparel industry, doesn't necessarily need to undergo a full-scale transformation during its upgrade and transformation process—but it can certainly focus on upgrading certain areas. Among these, medical and hygiene nonwoven fabrics represent one promising direction.
It is understood that China’s nonwoven fabric industry for medical and healthcare applications has gradually evolved from a fragmented industry structure to a relatively concentrated and rational industrial layout. In the coming years, both the global and Chinese markets for medical and healthcare nonwoven products will enter a phase of sustained growth. China’s nonwoven fabric industry for medical and healthcare applications boasts enormous development potential. Specifically, in the Pearl River Delta region, the medical and healthcare nonwoven industry in Jiujiang Town, Nanhai District, Foshan, has already achieved industrial clustering. A key initiative is the establishment of the “China Medical and Healthcare Nonwoven Products Demonstration Base,” which has attracted major companies such as Japan’s Toray to set up operations there.
Huang Minghua believes that the nonwoven fabric industry in the medical and healthcare sector has great potential. In addition to medical applications such as masks, bed sheets, and gauze, these fabrics are also widely used in industries like diapers and cosmetics. The Zhongshan Textile Engineering Society was established on January 14, 2015. Since its establishment, the society has attracted more than 100 members from upstream and downstream sectors of the textile and apparel industry, including research institutions, higher education institutions, independent think tanks, technical service providers, e-commerce companies, manufacturing and processing enterprises, design firms, and international trade organizations. Currently, the society is conducting a comprehensive study on the current status, characteristics, trends, and technological R&D of the nonwoven fabric industry, aiming to provide valuable insights for the industry’s future development.
